    Why Hair Fall Spikes During Monsoon in India — And the Routine That Actually Helps

    Every year, from June through September, Indian dermatology clinics and hair-care forums see the same spike: complaints of sudden, heavier hair fall. It's real, it's measurable, and it's not actually caused by the rain the way most people assume. The truth is a few months less dramatic — and a lot more useful to know.

    The timeline nobody explains: monsoon shedding was triggered in summer

    Hair follicles cycle through a growing phase (anagen) and a resting phase (telogen) before a strand sheds. That resting phase typically lasts around three months. Peak summer heat, UV exposure and dehydration between March and May push a larger-than-usual number of follicles into telogen — but the actual shedding doesn't become visible until those follicles complete their resting phase, roughly three months later. That lands squarely in June, July and August.

    This is why monsoon gets blamed for something that was largely set in motion during summer. It's not that monsoon is harmless — it compounds the problem in its own ways — but the underlying trigger for a meaningful share of what you're seeing in the shower drain right now happened months earlier.

    What monsoon itself actually does to your scalp

    High humidity keeps the scalp persistently damp between washes, creating conditions where Malassezia — the yeast responsible for most dandruff — overgrows more readily. An irritated, inflamed scalp is a worse environment for hair to grow in, independent of the seasonal shedding cycle described above.

    Rainwater in Indian cities frequently carries pollutants and a different mineral/pH profile than your regular water source, which can leave residue on the scalp if hair isn't rinsed properly after exposure. And wet hair is structurally weaker — the hair shaft swells and becomes more elastic when saturated, making it more prone to breakage from friction, brushing or tying up while still damp, which is extremely common during monsoon commutes.

    A monsoon-specific scalp routine

    Never tie hair up while wet, and avoid going to bed with damp hair — both put sustained tension and friction on the weakest, most breakage-prone state your hair is in. If you're caught in rain, rinse with clean water as soon as possible rather than letting it dry in place.

    Favour a lightweight, water-soluble leave-in serum over heavy oils during this season. Oils sitting on a scalp that's already staying damp longer than usual can trap moisture and debris against the skin, worsening the conditions that let Malassezia overgrow. A leave-in formula with an antifungal active (Piroctone Olamine) and a gentle exfoliant (Salicylic Acid) actively works against the monsoon-specific scalp environment rather than adding to it.

    Don't overwash in response to oiliness or humidity — stripping the scalp triggers rebound oil production, compounding the cycle. Two to three gentle washes a week, with daily leave-in scalp care in between, holds up better through the season than daily washing.

    When seasonal shedding is normal — and when it isn't

    Losing 50–100 hairs a day is considered normal, and a seasonal uptick above that baseline for a few weeks during peak monsoon months is common and typically self-resolves once the cycle catches up. What isn't normal: shedding that continues unabated well past monsoon into the next season, visible thinning at specific spots rather than diffusely, or hair loss accompanied by scalp pain, redness or scaling that doesn't respond to a basic scalp-care routine within 6–8 weeks.

    If shedding is persistent rather than seasonal, it's worth ruling out the non-seasonal causes covered elsewhere on this site — B12 and micronutrient deficiency being the most common and most fixable in the Indian population — rather than waiting out a cycle that may not actually be cyclical.
